Mexico City Long Weekend: Lucha Libre, Xochimilco, Castles, and Great Company

Mexico City doesn’t need much of an introduction. If you’ve been, you already know: it’s one of those cities that gets under your skin in the best possible way. The food alone is worth the flight. The neighborhoods, the history, the energy on a Sunday afternoon — there’s a reason people who visit once tend to start looking for excuses to come back.
This is yours.
We’re putting together a Total Access long weekend in CDMX — May 29 to 31 — and this one has a little something extra: Viktorija, our CEO and a Mexico City local for the past few years, will be joining us and showing us the city the way she actually lives it.
Not the tourist version. The real one. She’ll take you to her favorite taco stands, restaurants, and cafes, and give you a real sense of what it’s like to live in one of the world’s most hustling and bustling capitals.
Over three days, we’ll cover a lot of ground. Friday night kicks off with Lucha Libre — one of Mexico City’s most entertaining and culturally iconic experiences preceded by tacos and drinks in the lively neighborhoods of Condesa and Roma Norte.
Saturday takes us deep into the Historic Center on a private gourmet walking tour, winding through markets, cantinas, and specialty spots that most visitors never find, before gathering for a proper dinner in Polanco in the evening.
Sunday we visit Chapultepec Castle — the only royal castle in North America — with a private guide, followed by lunch and an afternoon on the trajineras of Xochimilco, drifting through UNESCO canals on a flower-covered boat with mariachi music floating across the water. We close with a farewell dinner before everyone heads home.
Three days, fully programmed, with every meal, drink, activity, and weekend transportation taken care of. All you need to do is get yourself to Mexico City, and do it before everyone disappears into summer mode.
As for the hotel, we leave that choice to you, though we are securing a special group rate at the InterContinental Presidente in Polanco, steps from where most of our activities will take place.
Whatever you decide, we’d encourage you to book sooner rather than later. Mexico City will be hosting the FIFA World Cup in mid-June, and hotel rates across the city are already climbing. The last weekend of May is still fairly good value, but that window won’t stay open long
Itinerary
Friday, May 29th
Welcome to CDMX: Tacos and Lucha Libre at Arena Mexico
Arrive in the afternoon, check in, and take a moment to settle into one of the most exciting cities in the world. Polanco, your base for the weekend, is one of Mexico City’s most elegant neighborhoods, lined with excellent restaurants, leafy parks, and the kind of streets that reward a slow afternoon walk. We recommend arriving early enough to shake off the journey and get a feel for the neighborhood before the evening begins!
We’ll be picking everyone up from the InterContinental at around 6 PM. That’s when the weekend officially starts.
Tacos in Condesa & Roma Norte
First stop: tacos. Viktorija will take you to Condesa and Roma Norte — some of her favorite neighborhoods in the city — for a casual early dinner at the kind of local spots that don’t make it onto the tourist map. This is Mexico City as the locals actually experience it: unpretentious, delicious, and the perfect way to ease into the evening.
Lucha Libre at Arena México
Then you will head to Arena México for the main event of the evening. If you have never been to a Lucha Libre fight, we envy you the experience of doing it for the first time. The venue is the sport’s most storied — loud, colorful, and completely, gloriously over the top. Masked wrestlers, dramatic storylines, a crowd that is entirely invested in every single move — it is one of those experiences that is impossible to fully explain and impossible to forget.
After the fight, we’ll see where the evening takes us. If the group is up for it, Mexico City’s nightlife is right there waiting.
Saturday, May 30th
The Heart of Mexico City: Gourmet Tour in Historic Center, and More
Private Gourmet Walking Tour — Historic Center
We will spend the late morning and early afternoon on a private gourmet walking tour through Mexico City’s Historic Center, one of the largest and most significant in the Americas.
This is not a sightseeing tour with occasional snacks, it is a genuine deep dive into Mexican food culture, history, and the stories behind what people here actually eat and why. Your guide will take us through markets, cantinas, street stalls, and specialty spots that most visitors walk straight past, with tasting stops woven through the route. Lunch is built into the tour itself, so arrive hungry!
By the time we finish, you will have a very different understanding of Mexican cuisine and a very full stomach.
Free Time
The afternoon is yours. You can head back to the hotel, explore Polanco at your own pace, wander down Avenida Masaryk — Mexico City’s answer to the Champs-Élysées, lined with luxury boutiques and excellent cafes — or simply find a terrace and watch the city go by.
Saturday Dinner — Polanco
In the evening we regroup for dinner at one of Polanco’s finest restaurants — the kind of place that reminds you why Mexico City has become one of the world’s most serious dining destinations.
Sunday, May 31st
The Best of Both Worlds: Chapultepec Castle and Xochimilco
Sunday is our fullest day, and in many ways our most memorable.
Chapultepec Castle — Private Guided Tour
You will start the morning at Chapultepec Castle, which sits at the top of a hill above the vast Chapultepec Park with sweeping panoramic views over the entire city. It is the only royal castle in North America, and its history is extraordinary — from its days as Maximilian’s imperial residence during the Second Mexican Empire, to the famous young military cadets who chose to die defending it rather than surrender during the Mexican-American War.
Sunday Lunch — Polanco
We will then be back in Polanco for a proper Sunday lunch: long, relaxed, unhurried.
Xochimilco — Private Trajinera
After lunch, you will head head south to Xochimilco — about 45 minutes from Polanco — for one of the most distinctly Mexican afternoons you will ever spend.
Xochimilco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a vast network of ancient canals built on what were once the floating gardens of the Aztec empire. We have our own private trajinera — one of the colorful hand-painted flat-bottomed boats that have been gliding these canals for centuries — and we will spend a couple of hours drifting through the waterways with cold drinks, snacks, and a mariachi band that will pull up alongside us on the water and play for as long as we want. Sunday afternoons on the trajineras are a Mexico City institution, and there is genuinely nothing else quite like it anywhere in the world.
Farewell Dinner — Polanco
We close the weekend the right way: back in Polanco for a farewell dinner, a final round of drinks, and the kind of conversation that tends to happen at the end of a very good trip.
Useful Information
Weather & What to Pack
May is one of the most beautiful months to visit Mexico City. At 2,240 meters above sea level, the city sits high enough that the heat never becomes oppressive — expect warm, sunny days in the low-to-mid 20s°C (mid-70s°F) and pleasant evenings that cool down enough to want a light layer.
It is technically the beginning of the rainy season, which in practice means the occasional afternoon or evening shower rather than anything that will slow you down.
Here’s what you may want to pack:
Friday — Lucha Libre & Tacos: Dress for fun. The Arena México crowd is colorful, loud, and festive — casual is perfectly appropriate, and comfort is key. Jeans, sneakers, a t-shirt or casual top, and a light jacket for the evening is all you need. If you want to lean into the spirit of the night with something bold or bright, absolutely go for it.
Saturday — Historic Center Walking Tour: This is the day to prioritize comfort. You will be on your feet for several hours winding through markets, streets, and stops across the Historic Center, so bring your most comfortable walking shoes. Light, breathable clothing works best for the daytime heat, and a small daypack or crossbody bag is handy for carrying water, and anything you pick up along the way. A packable rain jacket or compact umbrella is worth throwing in given the time of year.
Sunday — Chapultepec Castle & Xochimilco: Another active day, so comfortable walking shoes again for the castle climb — the views from the top are worth every step, but it is a proper uphill walk through the park to get there. For Xochimilco in the afternoon, dress casually and don’t worry too much about staying pristine — it’s a festive, outdoor, drinks-in-hand kind of afternoon.
Saturday & Sunday Evenings — Dinners in Polanco: Polanco restaurants have a certain energy to them, and dinner is an occasion worth dressing for. Smart casual to business casual is the right register: think of a nice dress or blouse, trousers, a blazer, or a stylish outfit you feel good in. Nothing too formal, no need for a tie — but a step up from what you wore during the day. The good news is you’ll have time to head back to the hotel and change before each evening, so you don’t need to carry your dinner outfit around with you all day.
General Packing Tips: A light cardigan or jacket for evenings is essential as the temperature drops once the sun goes down. Sunscreen and sunglasses for daytime activities are a must.
Electrical Outlets
Mexico uses the same Type A and B electrical outlets as North America, so your phones, cameras, laptops, and other devices will plug in without any special adapters needed. The voltage is 127V compared to 120V in the US, which is perfectly compatible with all your electronics, so you won’t need any voltage converters either.
However, it’s worth noting that some accommodations in Mexico may only have 2-prong outlets available, so if you have devices with grounding pins (like laptop chargers), consider bringing a small 3-to-2 prong adapter just in case.
