Visa (Apply Online in advance or Visa on Arrival)

Visitors to Tanzania can obtain a visa either upon arrival or in advance through the official online e-visa system.

The visa costs $100 for U.S. citizens and $50 for citizens from other countries, including Canada and the EU. For those applying on arrival, the visa can be issued at entry points such as airports, where you can have the visa stamped in your passport after payment.

If you prefer to apply in advance, it’s highly recommended to use the official government portal

Avoid applying through third-party websites, as many charge higher fees or are scams. Unfortunately, several travelers have lost money using unofficial sites, so sticking to the government portal ensures a safe and straightforward application process.

Travel Insurance for Zanzibar

Travel insurance is mandatory for all travelers visiting Zanzibar, as per the regulations introduced by the Zanzibar government.

This requirement ensures that visitors have coverage for medical emergencies, accidents, and other unforeseen events that could occur during their stay. The mandatory travel insurance includes coverage for trip cancellations, medical expenses, emergency evacuations, and repatriation for a stay of up to 92 days.

It is required to obtain this insurance before your arrival in Zanzibar, as travelers without proof of coverage may be denied entry.

You can purchase the insurance through the official Zanzibar government portal or opt for other international travel insurance providers, as long as the policy meets the required coverage.

For more detailed information, visit the Zanzibar Tourism website.

Yellow Fever and Other Vaccinations

A yellow fever vaccination is generally required for travelers entering Tanzania if they are arriving from, or have transited through, countries where yellow fever is endemic. (This includes those who have had a layover of 12 hours or more in such countries.)

However, if you are not coming from a yellow fever-risk area, vaccination is not required.

It’s recommended to carry an International Certificate of Vaccination (also known as the “yellow card”) as proof if applicable.

For more details, you can check official sources such as the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and the CDC for the latest travel advisories.

While no vaccinations are strictly required for entry into Tanzania (except for yellow fever if you’re coming from a high-risk area), several vaccines are recommended to protect against common illnesses – we suggest you check out the CDC and WHO websites for their latest suggestions

Weather

At the end of September, the weather in Dar es Salaam is typically warm and tropical. Daytime temperatures average around 30°C (86°F), while evenings cool down to approximately 22°C (72°F). The city experiences some humidity, but the overall conditions are pleasant, making it a comfortable time for visitors.

In the Northern Serengeti, temperatures are warm during the day, averaging around 27°C (81°F), with cooler evenings dropping to about 15°C (60°F). September is a dry season, so rainfall is minimal, making it an excellent time for game drives and wildlife viewing.

On the island of Zanzibar, the weather is warm and tropical with daytime temperatures averaging 30°C (85°F) and nighttime lows around 22°C (72°F). This is also a dry season for the island, providing perfect conditions for beach activities and exploring.

Clothing

For your trip to Tanzania at the end of September, you will want to pack light, breathable clothing to stay comfortable in the warm temperatures, which can reach up to 30°C (86°F) during the day.

Fabrics like cotton or linen are great choices, as they will help you stay cool, especially in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, where humidity may make it feel even warmer.

In the Northern Serengeti, while the days are warm, evenings and early mornings can be cooler, dropping to around 15°C (60°F). It’s a good idea to bring light layers like a fleece or jacket that you can easily throw on during game drives or outdoor activities when temperatures dip.

When visiting the Serengeti, it’s important to consider the color of your clothing. Neutral, earthy tones like khaki, beige, olive, and brown are recommended for a few key reasons.

First, these colors help you blend in with the natural surroundings, making you less noticeable to wildlife, which can enhance your safari experience. Bright colors like white, red, or blue should be avoided as they can make you stand out to animals and even attract insects like tsetse flies, which are drawn to dark or bright colors, particularly blue.

Wearing neutral-colored clothing also helps with dust management, as the Serengeti’s dry environment can cause dust to settle on your clothes, and light, neutral tones will make it less noticeable. Ultimately, sticking to earthy colors will provide a more comfortable and safer safari experience.

Sun protection is essential, so pack a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Wearing long-sleeved shirts and light trousers will also help protect you from the sun and potential insect bites, particularly in the Serengeti or near water.

When it comes to footwear, comfortable, closed-toe shoes or light hiking boots are ideal for safari walks and game drives

For beach days or lounging around in Zanzibar, sandals or flip-flops will be perfect. Don’t forget your swimwear for enjoying the resort pools and Zanzibar’s stunning beaches, along with light cover-ups or sarongs for a relaxed and comfortable beach vibe.

Overall, aim for clothing that balances comfort and practicality, while also protecting you from the elements and ensuring you’re prepared for the varying temperatures and activities.

Mosquito Repellent and Antimalarial Medication

When traveling to Tanzania and Zanzibar, it’s crucial to protect yourself from mosquito-borne diseases, particularly malaria, which is prevalent in most regions of the country. Here are some expanded recommendations:

Mosquito Repellent: Mosquitoes are most active during the evening and early morning. To protect yourself, apply a high-quality mosquito repellent to exposed skin. You should also wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and socks, particularly during the evening, to minimize skin exposure.

Treated mosquito nets are often provided at accommodations, but bringing your own can offer extra protection, especially in rural areas.

Antimalarial Medications: Tanzania is a malaria-endemic country, so it’s essential to take preventive medication, especially if you’re visiting rural or forested areas such as the Serengeti.

Antimalarial drugs such as doxycycline, mefloquine, or atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone) are typically recommended, but it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider before your trip to determine the best option for you based on your health, medical history, and the specific regions you’ll visit.

Other Preventive Measures: In addition to repellent and medication, staying in accommodations with air conditioning or screens on windows and doors can further reduce the risk of mosquito bites. The accommodations we’ve selected for your trip meet the necessary preventive measures for mosquito protection. Sleeping under a treated mosquito net is essential in areas with high mosquito activity.

Electrical Outlets

In Tanzania, the standard electrical voltage is 230V, and the frequency is 50Hz. The country primarily uses Type D and Type G electrical outlets.

Type D outlets have three round pins in a triangular configuration, and Type G outlets feature three rectangular pins, which are also commonly used in the UK.

If your devices are not compatible with the 230V standard or have a different plug type, you’ll need a voltage converter or a plug adapter to use them in Tanzania.

Many modern devices such as phones, laptops, and cameras often come with built-in converters, but it’s always best to check before you travel.

Currency

The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas.

It’s helpful to have small bills in both currencies, especially for tips and small purchases. (Please also note that some locals might be quite picky about the “quality” of the bills, asking for very crisp, undamaged bills.) Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and restaurants, but it’s wise to carry cash when visiting more remote areas.

We are so excited to see the interest in this trip, and worked hard to negotiate the best price on all of these high-end experiences, exclusively for our members.
