Explore Georgia with Your Fellow TA Members:

Historic Tbilisi, Majestic Caucasus Mountains, Ancient Monasteries, Wineries, and Beyond

September 6-13, 2023

We are very excited about the next bespoke itinerary that we have curated for our Total Access family. The trip features some of the most unique experiences, natural wonders and architectural gems that the Republic of Georgia has to offer.

For one week in early fall (September 6-13), we will explore this fascinating country, starting with the historic and vibrant Tbilisi… We will then visit Mtskheta, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world.

The next day, a helicopter will transfer us to the majestic Kazbegi, located amidst the Caucasus Mountains. This area, dotted with ancient monasteries and churches, is one of the most captivating places in Georgia.

You may recognize landmarks such as the Gergeti Trinity Church and the awe-inspiring Dariali Gorge from postcards – both attractions you will have the opportunity to visit during your time in Kazbegi.

We’ll make our way back towards the capital city, stopping in Kakheti Valley, a famous Georgian wine region.

We’ll spend a few relaxing days there at the beautiful lakeside Lopota Resort, visiting nearby wineries, learning how to make wine like the locals do, and taking in the scenic surroundings.

We’ll return to the capital city for some more business meetings and a final dinner, before saying goodbye to this wonderful country.

Day 1 and Day 2: Arrival to Tbilisi, Transfer to Stamba Hotel, Exploring the Old Town and Meeting with Local Businesses (Wednesday and Thursday, September 6-7)

We will begin our Georgian adventure in the capital of Tbilisi, where we’ll spend the first three nights.

Upon arrival, a private transfer will take you to the Stamba Hotel. Embodying the zeitgeist of contemporary Tbilisi, this designer hotel is a living, breathing reflection of the city’s growing global significance and dynamism.

On the first evening, we’ll enjoy dinner at a renowned local restaurant, Cafe Littera, led by star Georgian chef Tekuna Gachechiladze, who combines local Georgian cuisine with international flavors.

The next day, we’ll meet a local Georgian historian, who has curated a special walking tour of Tbilisi for our group.

Together with our professional guide, we will discover the old town, explore an ancient castle, and see a hidden waterfall in the middle of the old city. We will learn more about the history of landmarks such as the Metekhi Monastery and the Narikala Fortress, stroll through the bathhouse district, and soak up the atmosphere in bustling Meidan Square.

We will also visit the Tbilisi state Academy of Arts, and learn about how the different architectural styles combine with the Islamic interior, created by Qajar artists.

Additionally, we’ll also explore a few buildings from the Salin era – like the cable car station and the Academy of Science, also known by locals as “Tbilisi’s Guggenheim”.

After lunch at a cozy Georgian restaurant, you’ll have some time to relax at the hotel, before meeting with local business representatives to learn more about the potential opportunities in the country.

We’ll then continue networking with the local Georgian business community at the Funicular Restaurant, located on top of the hill, and offering some of the best views of the city. We’ll enjoy some cocktails while overlooking Tbilisi, before ending the day with a private dinner at the Funicular Restaurant.

Day 3: Tour of Ancient Capital City of Mtskheta, Wine Tasting and Lunch at Chateau Mukhrani (Friday, September 8)

On the third day of our Georgian adventure, we’ll visit the ancient capital of Mtskheta, located just about 12 miles (20km) north of Tbilisi.

Currently a small provincial capital, Mtskheta was a large fortified city and significant economical and political center for nearly a millennium until the fifth century AD.

Due to the historical significance of the town and its several outstanding monuments – like the Jvari Monastery, featuring stunning medieval architecture, which we’ll visit during the trip – Mtskheta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Afterward, we will head to Chateau Mukhrani, a traditional French-style chateau founded on the tradition of winemaking in the Mukhrani area, and dating back millennia.

It is housed in the original Georgian Royal Chateau, and the only one to unite four key components: the Vineyard, the Winery, the Chateau and the Winemaking history.

At the Chateau, we’ll sample the best Georgian wines, followed by a chef’s table lunch at the Mukhrani Estate. There, we’ll get to observe how the chef prepares dishes, and savor the combination of local flavors paired with locally produced wines.

We’ll then head back to Tbilisi after this leisurely lunch, where you’ll have a few hours to relax before dinner at Shushabandi – another acclaimed local restaurant in the city.

Day 4: Majestic Kazbegi in the Caucasus Mountains, Rooms Hotel and Visit to the Gergeti Trinity Church and Dariali Pass (Saturday, September 9)

Next on the itinerary is a Greater Caucasus mountain adventure, which begins with a short helicopter transfer (of about 45 minutes) to the Kazbegi region of Georgia.

Located at the base of Kazbek Mountain in Stepantsminda Village, Rooms Kazbegi Hotel will be our home for one night whilst we explore these majestic mountains.

This remote retreat was designed by two young Georgian architects, representing a dynamic new generation of Georgian designers. The sleek hotel features a geometric structure with balconies and a sun terrace made of steel, glass and timber, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

After checking in and enjoying lunch at the hotel, we’ll embark on an afternoon of exploring the wonders of Kazbegi. We’ll visit the renowned Gergeti Trinity Church, which is situated atop a hill, and dates back to the 14th century.

Next, we’ll explore the Dariali mountain pass with its Monastery Complex, where we’ll get to marvel at the area’s majestic mountains and breathtaking architecture. This mountain pass also holds historic significance as one of two crossings of the Greater Caucasus mountain range.

During the afternoon adventure at Kazbegi, we’ll even learn how to cook one of the most famous Georgian disheskhinkali dumplings!

To end the day, we’ll enjoy a relaxing dinner at Rooms Hotel and get some rest in the serene mountain resort.

Day 5: Relaxed Afternoon at the Lopota Lake Resort in Kakheti Valley, Dinner at Chateau Buera (Sunday, September 10)

After a day spent in Kazbegi, our next stop will be another captivating location in Georgia – the Kakheti Valley, famed for its vineyards and the verdant mountains that envelope it.

After breakfast at Rooms Kazbegi, we’ll hop on a helicopter for another short transfer to the Lopota Lake Resort and Spa, which will be our home for the following two nights.

The Lopota Resort is a remarkable property sprawling across more than 140 acres, and nestled alongside a scenic mountain lake.

After checking in and having lunch, there is an abundance of facilities for relaxation to explore at Lopota: boasting everything from a tranquil mountain forest spa and a Slavic bath, to indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a sauna and gym facilities, you’ll truly be spoiled for choice.

For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the serene Lopota Lake and its surroundings await your exploration.

In the evening, we will have dinner at Chateau Buera. Nothing compares to the experience of watching the sun set beyond the Caucasus from the Chateau’s terrace while savoring a glass of high-quality local wine in delightful company…

Situated within the resort, Chateau Buera is renowned not only for its wines, but also for its exquisite food and wine pairings. These culinary delights, prepared with locally sourced ingredients by renowned chefs, are a gastronomic adventure waiting to be savored.

Day 6: Explore the Romantic Sighnaghi, Wine Tasting, Harvest and Lunch at Tibaani Winery, Dinner at Silver Lakes in Kakheti Valley (Monday, September 11)

After a restful day at Lopota, we will spend the following morning exploring the landmarks of Kakheti Valley.

Our first stop will be Sighnaghi, a small city in eastern Georgia that is situated on a mountain overlooking the Alazani Valley.

Known as the Georgian “City of Love”, Sighnaghi is widely renowned for its quaint, narrow streets and medieval fortress walls, which contribute to its romantic appeal. (It is a place favored by both locals and tourists.)

One of the local highlights for this part of our trip is the Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino, a revered site originally constructed in the 4th century AD.

Following our visit to this monastery complex, we’ll enjoy some quality time at the Tibaani winery. An interesting fact about Tibaani wines is that they’re served in some of the world’s finest restaurants, including Noma in Copenhagen!

During our visit to the winery, we’ll also have the opportunity to taste some exquisite wines, learn about traditional Georgian winemaking techniques, and savor some of the country’s most scrumptious homemade dishes.

We have another exciting activity planned for the group: target shooting at Kakheti Valley. This exhilarating experience awaits our group during our visit to Sighnaghi and the Tibaani winery.

After a day filled with delightful experiences, we’ll then return to the Lopota Lake Resort for one more tranquil night. We’ll dine at the Silver Lakes restaurant, another acclaimed dining establishment by the famous Georgian chef Tekuna Gachechiladze.

Day 7: Transfer to Tbilisi, JW Marriott Hotel, Law Firm Presentation, Dinner at Zero Bar (Tuesday, September 12)

The next day, we’ll return to Tbilisi. It is about a 2-hour drive (ground transfer) from Kakheti Valley, which will fly by as you enjoy the beautiful Georgian landscapes on the way to the capital city.

We’ve scheduled some downtime for you before your journey home, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy some free time before our final lunch.

For our final night in Tbilisi, we’ve chosen one of our favorite hotels, the JW Marriott Tbilisi, which will be ready for our early check-in.

During the afternoon, we’ll get to listen to a presentation by a local law firm about Georgian residency and the country’s favorable tax incentives. If you’re interested, you can attend this informative session at the hotel.

Alternatively, you’re free to take the afternoon off to relax before your journey – or you could opt to continue exploring the vibrant capital city.

In the evening, we’ll have our farewell dinner at Zero Bar, a trendy culinary hotspot in Tbilisi. It’s renowned for its tantalizing dishes and welcoming ambiance, and we think that it is an excellent venue in which to wrap up our adventure.

Day 8: Breakfast at JW Marriott, Transfers to Tbilisi Airport, Departures (Wednesday, September 13)

On the last day of our trip, after breakfast at JW Marriott, we’ll arrange private transfers to the Tbilisi International Airport for everyone in the group, depending on when your flight departs.

Entry Requirements

There are no longer any Covid-related requirements in Georgia. You’ll only need the following to enter the country:

  • Valid passport
  • Return ticket from Georgia

(Most people won’t need a visa to enter Georgia – its visa-free regime allows citizens of 94 countries to visit without having to worry about obtaining a visa. You can check the full list of visa-free countries, here.)

Climate and Weather

In Tbilisi, in early September, you can expect warm and pleasant weather with gradually decreasing temperatures as the month progresses.

During the day, temperatures typically average 72°F (22°C), while at night, temperatures drop to around 62°F (16°C).

Kakheti, a region known for its vineyards and winemaking, experiences similar weather conditions to Tbilisi in early-to-mid-September.

In Kazbegi, which is located in the mountainous region of Georgia, the weather in early September can be cooler compared to Tbilisi and Kakheti due to the higher altitude.

During the day, temperatures in Kazbegi average about 64°F (18°C), while at night, temperatures can drop significantly to around 41 to 50°F (5 to 10°C).

Clothing

Lightweight cotton and linen clothing and a cardigan will work for the days in Tbilisi and the Kakheti Valley, which we’ll visit in Georgia at the beginning of September.

However, you will want to pack some warmer clothes for the cooler weather in the mountains in Kazbegi, as well as the potentially cooler evenings in Tbilisi. To this end, you may want to pack a sweater or a lightweight jacket.

Electrical Outlets

For Georgia, there are two associated plug types: C and F. Georgia operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz. If you are flying in from the US, be sure to pack a regular travel adaptor.
